Discussion is going on in the Joint Committee (JPC) of Parliament regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. The members of the committee have different views on different subjects. For this reason, opinions are also being taken from common people and other organizations. JPC members have decided to visit four big cities of the country to discuss this law. From September 26 to September 30, JPC will hold a meeting regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill in Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru. During this time, opinions will also be taken from organizations.

The Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in the Parliament, but after protests it has been sent to the JPC. The Joint Committee of Parliament is discussing it. Meanwhile, suggestions and opinions have been sought from the people regarding this bill. Many leaders allege that the properties of the Waqf Board are being reduced through this law. At the same time, the government says that this law will reduce the complexities of the Waqf Board.

Mirwaiz sought time from parliamentary committee

Mirwaiz of Kashmir and head of Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), Umar Farooq has expressed serious concern over the proposed amendments in the Waqf Act, saying that these threaten the interests of the Muslim community and violate fundamental rights. In a two-page letter to Jagdambika Pal, chairman of the joint parliamentary committee examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Farooq has demanded that the MMU delegation be given an opportunity to meet the committee and discuss its apprehensions. The MMU, an alliance representing various Islamic organisations, ulema and educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, claims that the proposed amendments threaten the interests of the Muslim community and violate fundamental rights.

Allegations of violation of Muslim Personal Law

Mirwaiz said these amendments not only violate the Muslim Personal Law protected under Article 25 of the Constitution, but also increase the sense of insecurity within the Muslim community, which already feels a “threat” to its religious freedom. Mirwaiz stressed that Waqf properties are dedicated by Muslims for charitable purposes and serve the underprivileged. “Waqf properties are personal properties dedicated by Muslims in the name of God for the benefit of their society,” the letter said.
