New Delhi, September 19 (IANS). The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal of ‘One Nation-One Election’. PM Modi has described ‘One Nation, One Election’ as the need of the country. He has said that there is no political motive behind ‘One Nation, One Election’.
But, do you know that when Lok Sabha elections were held for the first time in the country, assembly elections were also held in other states simultaneously. Let us tell you when and for how long simultaneous elections were held in the country and what will be the benefits to India from the implementation of ‘One Nation, One Election’.
Four years after India’s independence, i.e. in 1951-52, Lok Sabha elections were held for the first time in the country. During this period, along with the Lok Sabha, elections for the state assemblies were also held in all other states, this process continued for four consecutive Lok Sabha elections. In 1957, 1962 and 1967, elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were also held simultaneously. However, between 1967 and 1969, this sequence was broken and many assemblies had to be dissolved.
In 1971, Lok Sabha elections were held before time in the country. The first, second and third Lok Sabhas completed their full five-year terms, but elections were announced before the fourth Lok Sabha completed its term. Due to Indira Gandhi’s decision, Lok Sabha elections were held 15 months before time (in 1971). Since then, the practice of holding simultaneous elections in the country ended, although in some states assembly elections are still held along with Lok Sabha elections.
As the year 2024 approaches, once again the demand for ‘One Nation, One Election’ has gained momentum in the country. If the bill related to ‘One Nation, One Election’ is passed in the Parliament, then the country can get many big benefits. For example, the country will get relief from the reduction in expenditure on elections. Apart from this, the public will not have to bear the brunt of elections again and again. Not only this, government work will also not be disrupted due to the implementation of the code of conduct.
