Nageswara Rao (full name: Akkineni Nageswara Rao, English: Akkineni Nageswara Rao, born: 20 September 1924 – died: 22 January 2014) is a famous Telugu film actor and film producer of Indian cinema. He was awarded the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in 2011 and the highest honor of Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1990 by the Government of India for his significant contribution in the field of art.
Biography
A. Nageswara Rao, the youngest of his five brothers, was born on 20 September 1924 in a very ordinary family of Rampuram, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. His mother’s name is Akkineni Punnamma and father’s name is Akkineni Venkataratnam. Due to the poor financial condition of the family, his early education was only till primary school. His son ‘Akkineni Nagarjuna’ is a famous actor.
Major films
In 1941, at the age of just 17, he started his film career with Ghantasal Balaramayya’s Telugu film ‘Sita Rama Jananam’ (1942). In this film, he played the role of Lord Shri Ram.

Veteran Telugu producer-actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the recipient of the Indian film industry’s biggest Dadasaheb Phalke Award, died in Hyderabad in the wee hours of Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Nageswara Rao, 91, was battling cancer for the past several years. Nageswara Rao, fondly called ‘ANR’, died in his sleep, his son and actor Nagarjuna said. Nageswara Rao is remembered for his performances in hit films like ‘Tenalirama Krishna’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Maya Bazaar’ and ‘Missamma’. Nageswara Rao is survived by three daughters and two sons. His son Nagarjuna is well known to English film audiences, and Nagarjuna’s wife Amala has also acted in English films. Several of Nageswara Rao’s grandsons have also established themselves as actors. In a career spanning over seven decades, Nageswara Rao has acted in nearly 250 Telugu and several Tamil films, and was currently acting in a film titled ‘Manam’, which features actors from all three generations of his family.
