Rao Birender Singh (English: Rao Birender Singh, born- 20 February, 1921; died- 30 September, 2009) was an Indian politician. On March 24, 1967, he became the second Chief Minister of Haryana on the strength of the United Legislative Party. He was the Chief Minister of Haryana for a few months from March 24, 1967 to November 2, 1967. Former Chief Minister Rao Virendra Singh is still remembered with respect even today. Even though there has been a lot of change in today’s political environment, there was a time in Ahirwal when the politics here was run on his instructions. Rampura House, the residence of Rao Virendra Singh, who gave national recognition to the name Ahirwal, was the center of Ahirwal’s politics for years. Rao Virendra Singh was born on February 20, 1921 in Rewari, Punjab province. His wife’s name was Rani Chandra Prabha. Rao Inderjit Singh, Rao Yadvendra Singh, Rao Ajit Singh are his sons. Rao Virendra Singh received his higher education from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi.[1]
In 1952, when the first elections were held in independent India, Rao Virendra Singh contested as an independent candidate from Rewari, but he was defeated in that election. After this, in the same year he formed his own party named ‘Kisan Mazdoor Party’. In 1954, he was elected as an independent member of the Punjab Legislative Council from Ambala division. In the cabinet of Sardar Pratap Singh Kairon, he was given the responsibility of Transport and Revenue Minister. In the first general elections held in 1967 after the formation of Haryana, Rao Virendra Singh became MLA from Pataudi by winning the election from his ‘Vishal Haryana Party’. He had the honor of becoming the first elected Assembly Speaker of the state. On March 24, 1967, Rao Virendra Singh became the second Chief Minister of the state on the strength of the United Legislative Party. In 1971, Vishal won the Mahendragarh Lok Sabha election from Haryana Party. Became MLA from Ateli in 1977. After the Emergency, on the insistence of Indira Gandhi, Rao Virendra Singh merged his party with the Congress. When the Congress government was formed at the Center in 1980, Indira Gandhi entrusted Rao Virendra Singh with the responsibility of many important departments like agriculture, irrigation, rural development, food and supplies. Rao Virendra Singh left active politics after 1996. Rao Virendra Singh died of heart failure on September 30, 2009 in Gurgaon.
