Seoul, October 6 (IANS). Asiana Airlines on Sunday announced that it will increase charges for excess baggage on its international flights from January 2, 2025.
Asiana said the fee for carrying more than the prescribed amount of luggage will increase by up to 40,000 won ($29.66), depending on the routes. For short-haul routes within 90 minutes from Korea, the excess baggage fee will increase from 60,000 won per piece to 90,000 won.
Fees for flights to Europe, Africa and Oceania will increase from 140,000 won to 180,000 won per piece. Each excess baggage fee on flights to the United States will be 240,000 won, up from the current 200,000 won.
Asiana will also increase its excess weight fee, capping it at 23 kilograms, Yonhap news agency reports. On non-US international flights, passengers are charged 35,000 to 90,000 won for each piece of checked baggage weighing 24 kg to 28 kg, while passengers are charged 50,000 to 110,000 won for each piece of checked baggage weighing 29 kg to 32 kg. Asiana will charge passengers 60,000 won to 110,000 won for all these weight categories combined. Asiana, South Korea’s second-largest airline, said it would be the first increase in excess baggage fees since July 2019.
“Given the increase in operating costs, this was an inevitable step,” Asiana said. “We will offer a 10 percent discount to passengers who purchase additional baggage allowance in advance.”
