The West Bengal government rejected the mass resignation of doctors from government hospitals in the state. The state government said the resignations are not legally valid and should be submitted personally as per service rules. Senior doctors of state-run medical colleges and hospitals in West Bengal had resigned en masse, causing a stir in the medical sector. Doctors of Sagar Dutta Hospital and Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (PGMER) Institute have also supported this mass resignation and are preparing to submit their resignations soon, which has further increased the pressure on the Mamata Banerjee government.
Kolkata’s R.G. Demanding justice in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kar Medical College and Hospital, several doctors of state government-run hospitals have submitted a collectively signed “resignation letter” to the government. “Unless an employee sends his resignation personally to the employer as per service rules, it is not a resignation letter,” Alapan Bandyopadhyay, chief advisor to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, told reporters at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ here. “
He clarified that the letter sent by the doctors contained only collective signatures and did not discuss specific issues. Earlier this week, R.G. A group of senior doctors of Kar Medical College had sent a collectively signed “resignation letter” in solidarity with their protesting junior colleagues. Subsequently, doctors from other government hospitals also sent similar letters. Junior doctors of several government hospitals in the state are on a fast unto death demanding justice for their colleague, resignation of the state health secretary and increased safety at the workplace.
