Nirupa Roy (English: Nirupa Roy; born January 4, 1931, Gujarat; death October 13, 2004) is remembered in Hindi cinema as an actress who gave new dimensions to the character of a mother through her characters. . By the way, his original name was ‘Kokila Ben’. Whenever it comes to strengthening the character of mother in Indian cinema, the first name that comes to mind is Nirupa Roy, who with her unmatched performance took the character of mother to great heights in Hindi cinema. This excellent actress was honored with the ‘Filmfare Award’ for Best Supporting Actress thrice.

Nirupa Roy was born on January 4, 1931 in a middle-class Gujarati family in Balsad, Gujarat state. Because of his fair complexion he was called ‘Dhori Chakli’. His father was a government servant in the Railways. Nirupa Roy received education till fourth standard. When she was only 15 years old, she got married to Kamal Roy, an employee of the rationing department working in Mumbai. After marriage, Nirupa Roy also came to Mumbai. The Roy couple also became parents of two sons, named ‘Yogesh’ and ‘Kiran’.

In those days, producer-director B. M. Vyas was looking for new faces for his new film ‘Ranakdevi’. He advertised in the newspaper for the need of actors for his film. Nirupa Roy’s husband was very fond of films and aspired to become an actor. Kamal Roy with his wife B. M. went to meet Vyas and offered to become an actor, but B. M. Vyas said that his personality was not fit to become an actor. But if he wants, his wife can get work as an actress in the film. Nirupa Roy started working in the film ‘Ranakdevi’ at Rs 150 per month. But after some time he too was removed from this film. This was the beginning of Nirupa Roy’s struggle.[1]

Nirupa Roy started her cine career with the Gujarati film ‘Gansundari’ released in 1946. He also turned towards Hindi films with the film ‘Hamari Manzil’ released in the year 1949. O. In this film directed by P. Dutta, Prem Adeeb played the role of his hero. In the same year he got the opportunity to work with Jayaraj in the film ‘Garibi’. After the success of these films, she was successful in making her mark as an actress. In 1951, another important film of Nirupa Roy, ‘Har Har Mahadev’ came. In this film she played the role of Goddess Parvati. After the success of this film, she also became famous as a goddess among the audience. During this time, she played the role of Draupadi in the film ‘Veer Bhimsen’, which received a lot of applause. In most of the films that Nirupa Roy worked in in the fifties and sixties, the stories of most of the films were full of religious and devotional sentiments. However, Nirupa Roy also played a negative character in the film ‘Sindbad the Sailor’ released in 1951.

The film ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, released in the year 1953, proved to be a milestone in Nirupa Roy’s cinema career. In this film directed by Vimal Roy, she appeared in the role of a farmer’s wife. Balraj Sahni played the lead role in the film. He received international fame for his powerful acting in this film with excellent acting. The film ‘Munim Ji’, made under the banner of ‘Filmistan Studio’ in 1955, proved to be an important film of Nirupa Roy. In this film she played the role of Devanand’s mother. She was awarded the ‘Filmfare Award’ for Best Supporting Actress for her strong performance in the film. But after this she did not accept the role of mother for six years.[1]

She once again played the role of a mother in the film ‘Chhaya’ released in 1961. In this she played the role of Asha Parekh’s mother. Seeing her tremendous performance in this film too, she was awarded the ‘Filmfare Award’ for Best Supporting Actress. The film ‘Deewar’, released in 1975, is counted among the important films of Nirupa Roy’s career. In this film directed by Yash Chopra, she played the role of Shashi Kapoor, representing good and evil, and Amitabh Bachchan’s mother. In the film, she brought alive the character of the mother with her natural acting.
