Jarnail Singh (English: Jarnail Singh, born- 20 February, 1936, Hoshiarpur district, Punjab; died- 13 October, 2000, Canada) is one of the best players of football. He has played the role of the best ‘defender’ in helping India win. In the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, Jarnail Singh played an important role in helping India win the gold medal with his strokes. He also led the 1966 Asian All-Star team. He was awarded ‘Arjuna Award’ in 1964.
Jarnail Singh’s full name is ‘Jarnail Singh Dhillon’. He has been a very successful Indian football player. Jarnail Singh was born on 20 February 1936 in Panam, District Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Jarnail Singh took the art of defense in football to new heights with his strength and superior performance. He played for Khalsa College Mahipalpur Punjab from 1952 to 1956, then was a member of the Khalsa Sporting College, Punjab team between 1956–1957. In 1957–1958 he was a member of the Rajasthan Club, Calcutta team.[1]
In the golden era of Indian football, Jarnail Singh, like other great players of his time, played an important role in taking Indian football forward and on the path of progress. His ability and excellence in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games is not hidden from anyone. His best performance there is still remembered. In these Asian Games, Jarnail Singh had six stitches due to a head injury, but he forgot it and played as a forward and scored such an important goal that India won the gold medal for the first time in Asian football by winning first in the semi-finals and then in the final. could.
Two years later, in the 1964 Asia Cup held in Tel Aviv, Jarnail Singh performed extremely well as a defender and India became the runner-up in that game. In 1964 itself, after good performance in the Merdeka tournament of Malaysia, Jarnail Singh took over the reins of the team from Chunni Goswami. He was the captain of the Indian football team from 1965 to 1967 and under his leadership the team performed extremely well and achieved many successes. Jarnail Singh was also the captain of the ‘Asian All Star Team’ in 1965-1966 and 1966-1967.
Jarnail Singh died on October 13, 2000 in Vancouver, Canada.
