History News Desk!! Lala Hardayal (English: Lala Hardayal, born- October 14, 1884, Delhi; died- March 4, 1939 AD, Philadelphia) was a famous revolutionary. Lala Hardayal ji had founded ‘Ghadar Party’. After enduring many hardships while wandering in foreign countries, Lala Hardayal ji inspired and encouraged the patriots for India’s independence.

Education

Lala Hardayal ji received higher education in Delhi and Lahore. The feeling of patriotism was filled in him since his student days. Along with Master Amir Chand, Bhai Bal Mukund etc., he had also formed a group of youth in Delhi. His group in Lahore included youths like Lala Lajpat Rai. MA. Due to his respectable position in the B.Sc. examination, he got a scholarship from the Punjab Government and went to London to study.

In London, Lala Hardayal ji came in contact with Bhai Parmanand, Shyam Krishna Verma etc. He did not accept getting education on the scholarship of the British government. He formed an organization named ‘Political Missionary’ with the help of Shyam Krishna Verma. Through this he kept trying to bring Indian students into the mainstream of the nation. He spent two years at St. John’s College, London and then returned to India.

Hardayal ji reached Lahore via his in-laws’ house in Patiala, Delhi and became the editor of an English newspaper named ‘Punjab’. Seeing his influence growing, when his arrest started being discussed in government circles, Lala Lajpat Rai requested him to send him abroad. They reached Paris. Shyam Krishna Verma and Bhikaji Cama were already there. Lala Hardayal went there and edited the papers named ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Talwar’. Hardayal reached San Francisco, America in 1910 AD. There he organized the workers who had gone from India. Published a letter named ‘Ghadar’.

Ghadar Party

Ghadar Party was established on June 25, 1913. The party was born in ‘Astoria’ of San Francisco, America with the aim of uprooting the English Empire. The founding president of Ghadar Party was Sohan Singh Bhakna. Apart from this, there were Kesar Singh Thathagarh (Vice President), Lala Hardayal (General Secretary), Lala Thakurdas Dhuri (Joint Secretary) and Pandit Kanshiram Madroli (Treasurer). The party was also named ‘Ghadar Party’ on the basis of the letter ‘Ghadar’. The letter ‘Ghadar’ drew the attention of the world towards the atrocities being committed by the British in India. Branches of the new party were opened in Canada, China, Japan etc. Lala Hardayal was its general secretary.

When the First World War started, Lala Hardayal took steps to encourage armed revolution in India. In June 1915, guns were sent to Bengal in two ships from Germany, but on the information of informers, both the ships were seized. Hardayal also traveled to countries like Switzerland, Türkiye etc. to campaign for India. He was put under house arrest for some time in Germany. From there he went to Sweden, where he spent 15 years of his life.

When Hardayal ji did not get support from anywhere to fulfill his objective, he started preaching pacifism. He went to Philadelphia to lecture on this subject. He was eager to come to India in 1939 AD. He had not even seen the face of his daughter, who was born after he left India, but this could not happen, he could not see his daughter even once. Arrangements for his residence in India had been made, but on March 4, 1939, this fakir of the country’s freedom merged into the Panchatattva forever in a foreign country while sitting on a chair.
