Lalu Bhai Samaldas Mehta, the famous industrialist of his time, was born on 14 October 1863 in an affluent family in Bhavnagar town of Saurashtra. His father Samaldas Parmanand was first the Chief Justice of the princely state and then became Diwan. After Samaldas, one of his sons Vitthaldas became Diwan. Lalu Bhai was educated at Elphinstone College, Mumbai. He believed that the country could progress only through the development of industries and on the basis of cooperation. In 1926, the British Government honored him with the title of ‘Sir’.

He played a major role in establishing a shipping company named ‘Scindia Steam Navigation Company’ along with Balchand Hirachand. They are cement, paperChina, were also pioneers in the establishment of glass, and electrical equipment industries. He was the director of Tata Iron and Steel Company for a long time. He had a major contribution in taking forward Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. It was he who founded ‘Mumbai Live Insurance Company’.
