United Nations, October 15 (IANS). The second phase of the polio vaccination campaign has started in Gaza, which was devastated by Israeli attacks. UN humanitarian workers said the operation began in the central area of the Gaza Strip.
According to Xinhua news agency, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday that in less than two weeks, UNRWA (United Nations Relief Agency for Palestinians), the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund aims to administer the second dose of the novel oral polio vaccination to about 5,90,000 children under 10 years of age.
The first phase of vaccination was implemented from September 1 to 12, reaching more than 5,59,000 children.
Like the first round, the second round will also have three phases, each consisting of three campaign days and one catch-up day.
Responding to Sunday night’s Israeli attack on tents for displaced people near the Al Aqsa hospital in Gaza, UN Acting Under-Secretary-General Joyce Masuya said there is ‘no end’ to the hardships Palestinians are facing.
In a statement, Massuya said that there is virtually no safe place for people in Gaza. They demanded an end to atrocities and protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Let us tell you that many people were burnt to death in this attack, while many others including women and children were seriously burnt. A few hours before this, there was an attack on a shelter built in a school in Nusrat, in which more than 20 people were reportedly killed and many others were injured.
