Prabowo Subianto, newly elected President of Indonesia.
Jakarta: Prabowo Subianto has been sworn in as the 8th President of the world’s most populous Muslim country. Heads and representatives of more than 40 countries attended his swearing-in ceremony. Prabowo took charge as the eighth President of Indonesia on Sunday. He has also been the former Defense Minister of Indonesia. Prabowo Subianto (73) took the oath of office by placing his hand on the Quran, the holy scripture of Muslims, in front of the country’s parliamentarians and dignitaries invited from other countries, after which he was welcomed by thousands of supporters present on the streets.
His swearing-in ceremony was organized in a grand manner in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Leaders and senior officials of more than 40 countries participated in it. Those attending Prabowo’s swearing-in ceremony mainly included Britain, France, America, Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Korea, China, Australia and other South-East Asian countries. Subianto has been a long-time rival of highly popular President Joko Widodo and has contested the presidential election against him twice, but on both occasions in 2014 and 2019, Joko Widodo refused to accept his defeat. However, Widodo appointed Subianto as defense chief after becoming president again.
Prabowo has made this promise to the people of his country
Prabowo Subianto, who defeated Indonesia’s popular President Joko Widodo, has made many big promises to the people of his country. During the presidential election campaign, he had promised to continue key policies such as building a new capital city at a cost of several billion dollars, curbing raw material exports to boost domestic industry, and so on. Subianto won a landslide victory in February’s direct presidential election on the back of Widodo’s support and promise to continue his policies. This is how he went from being a former general accused of human rights abuses to becoming President during the dark days of Indonesia’s military dictatorship. (AP)
