12 more Bangladeshis detained for illegally entering Tripura

Agartala, October 27 (IANS). Infiltration from anarchy and violence affected Bangladesh is not showing any signs of stopping. The Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday arrested 12 more Bangladeshi nationals and a child in Tripura for illegally entering India, officials said.

A BSF spokesperson said a mobile check post was set up near the Agartala railway station and nine Bangladeshi nationals were also detained.

During interrogation, the Bangladeshi nationals told that they were planning to go to Kolkata to settle permanently in India.

In a separate operation, BSF troops from Belonia in south Tripura detained four women and two children along the banks of Muhuri river, which runs through the India-Bangladesh border dividing the two countries, according to the spokesperson.

Of the four detained, three women and a child are Bangladeshi and one woman and a child are Indian.

The Bangladeshi national is a resident of Chandpur district while the Indian woman is from South Tripura district. they know each other.

In the last three and a half months, the Government Railway Police, BSF and Tripura Police have arrested around 435 Bangladeshi nationals and over 55 Rohingyas from Agartala Railway Station and various places in Tripura after they entered India illegally.

The spokesperson said the BSF has intensified operations along the India-Bangladesh border and in the state to prevent infiltration and cross-border crime.

Eight more Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, were arrested from different places in Tripura on Thursday on charges of illegally entering India.

The BSF had also arrested two Indian brokers on October 24 for illegally allowing Bangladeshi nationals to enter India. Although the majority of Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally and were arrested by security forces were Muslims, there were also Hindus among those detained.

A BSF spokesperson said that since the unrest in Bangladesh, the BSF has increased security along the 856 km long India-Bangladesh border with Tripura to prevent illegal cross-border movement of people and crimes.

The Rohingyas crossed into India illegally after fleeing their camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where more than 1 million displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar have been living since 2017.

Both Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas told Indian security officials that they had entered India illegally in search of jobs and asylum.
