Dr. Nagendra (English: Dr. Nagendra, born- March 9, 1915, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh; died- October 27, 1999, New Delhi) was a famous Hindi litterateur of India. Dr. Nagendra had an important contribution in enriching the criticism of modern Hindi. He was considered a great scholar of poetry. Along with his ideological greatness, his personality has also found expression in his essays. The qualities of a kind-hearted and emotional essayist are well reflected in his essays. The reason for this is that Nagendra ji entered the field of Hindi literature as a poet. His talent developed basically as a critical essayist. Nagendra has been especially successful as a literary critic of Hindi.
Dr. Nagendra was born on March 9, 1915 in a town called Atrauli in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. As part of his education, Nagendra ji did M.A. in English and Hindi subjects. Had done. After this he did D.Litt in Hindi. Had also obtained the degree of. After retiring from the post of Professor and Head of Hindi Department from ‘Delhi University’, Nagendra ji became independently engaged in the practice of literature. He also served on the post of ‘Emeritus Professor’. That ‘Agra University'[1]from Agra, was decorated with a research degree on the thesis titled “Study of Dev in the context of Ritikaal”. In various universities of India, Dr. Nagendra was appointed as an expert at the time of appointment to the posts of lecturer, reader and professor.[2]

Nagendra ji played an important role in making the dignity of Hindi essay literature unique through his sharp pen. The titles ‘My Business’ and ‘Literary Creation’ written by him symbolize the subjective style of this essay writer. Dr. Nagendra believed that “A teacher is a lecturer and a rational person by nature. Critical style – Nagendra ji was basically respected as a critical and thoughtful essayist. In this style, the writer solves the problems through arguments. He clarifies very serious and intellectual subjects in simple form through his skillful method of analysis and tries to explain controversial subjects in a very comprehensible manner. His essay collection titled ‘Steps of Faith’ is a good example of this style.
Prasadic style – The use of this style can be seen everywhere in the essay literature of Dr. Nagendra. Through this style, the author has tried to present the subject in a simple and understandable manner. It is also a fact that Dr. Nagendra’s mind remained completely engrossed in the teaching profession. That is why while writing he used to take care that there should not be any kind of ambiguity in what he is saying.[2]

Conversational style – The use of this style can be seen in the composition titled ‘Lack of humor in Hindi literature’. In this style, both clarity and analysis will be achieved for the aware scholars.
Epistolary style – Dr. Nagendra has used epistolary style in his work titled ‘Keshav ka Acharyatva’. The noteworthy thing is that the work titled ‘Anubhooti Ke Kshan’ written by Dr. Vijayendra Graduate is also an essay entirely in the epistolary style.
Question-answer style – The beauty of ‘question-answer style’ also gets targeted in the writings of Dr. Nagendra. In this style the essayist himself asks the question and also answers it himself. The essay titled ‘Review of Literature’ written by Dr. Nagendra can be considered as another example of this style.
