10-20 percent women suffer from psoriasis during pregnancy: Expert

New Delhi, November 2 (IANS). Health experts said that hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy can increase the risk of psoriasis in women by about 10-20 percent.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation of the skin. It causes thick, itchy, scaly patches on the body, most commonly on the knees, elbows, torso and even the scalp. Its common symptoms are red spots, rashes, skin scaling, dry and cracked skin, itching and pain.

This is caused by an overactive immune system that causes inflammation.

Dr Jisha Pillai, dermatologist, Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, told IANS: “Pregnancy is a life-changing phase for women. However, it can often bring a number of challenges for expectant mothers. One of the serious problems is psoriasis. “Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy often lead to changes in the immune response.”

“About 10-20 percent of women may suffer from psoriasis during pregnancy. However, psoriasis does not pose any risk to the fetus,” Pillai said.

Pillai added that stress during pregnancy can also aggravate psoriasis and lead to new onset of the condition. Additionally, changes in skincare routines and sensitivity to environmental triggers may put pregnant women at greater risk for outbreaks.

Other trigger factors include smoking, alcohol, skin infections, cold weather, and certain medications.

In addition to pregnancy hormones, changes in medications are also potential triggers for psoriasis.

“Treatment of psoriasis is not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the fetus,” Dr. Parineeta Kalita, associate director of robotic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology at Max Super Specialty Hospital, told IANS.

The doctor said that women with more severe psoriasis before pregnancy may also have a higher risk of developing it. Health experts stressed the need to consult a dermatologist and gynecologist to help manage psoriasis effectively during pregnancy. They should only use products recommended by dermatologists.

Pillai said, “Pregnant women should consult a doctor without delay as soon as they notice symptoms of psoriasis.”
