New Delhi. During the first session of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, there was a heated debate between PDP and BJP MLAs regarding the restoration of Article 370. PDP MLA Waheed Para, representing Pulwama, presented a resolution during the session, demanding restoration of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Parra said it is necessary to restore the important role of the Jammu and Kashmir UT Assembly, similar to that of the Constituent Assembly. This proposal was also supported by AIP Party MLA Sheikh Khurshid.
BJP’s protest
This proposal, moved by PDP member Waheed Para, was strongly opposed by BJP MLAs. BJP opposed the acceptance of this proposal in the Assembly and demanded the Speaker to reject this proposal. The Speaker has said that a decision will be taken after listening to the proposal, while BJP has strongly demanded that it be rejected.
Speaker’s statement
After tremendous uproar in the Assembly, the Speaker said that he has not received the proposal yet, but when he will see it, he will take an appropriate decision. BJP has also requested to remove some comments opposing the proposal.
Abdul Rahim Rather became speaker
Senior National Conference (NC) leader Abdul Rahim Rather has been elected speaker in the first session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Rather, who is a seven-time MLA from Charar-e-Sharif seat, will assume this new responsibility and lead the assembly proceedings. BJP’s Narendra Singh Raina has been handed over the post of Vice President and Sunil Sharma of Leader of Opposition. CM Omar Abdullah and Protem Speaker Mubarak Gul congratulated Rather on becoming the Speaker.
Political journey of Abdul Rahim Rather
Abdul Rahim Rather, aged 80, has previously been the speaker of the assembly and served as the leader of the opposition in the PDP-Congress coalition government from 2002 to 2008. Information about this election was already given in the work list issued by the Assembly Secretariat. This session of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will last for five days, in which important issues will be debated.
