The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Tuesday issued a bailable warrant against BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Pragya, former BJP MP from Bhopal, is an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

What is Malegaon blast case?

The case pertains to the bomb blast that took place in Malegaon, Maharashtra on September 29, 2008, in which six people were killed and more than 100 were injured. The initial investigation into the Malegaon blast case was conducted by Maharashtra ATS before it was handed over to the NIA. Maharashtra ATS had detained Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and interrogated her for a long time.

Sadhvi Pragya’s lawyer had given this argument in the court

Last month, Pragya Thakur’s lawyer had told the court that the blast could have been carried out by the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Advocate JP Mishra, appearing for Thakur, claimed that after the blast at Bhiku Chowk in Malegaon, local people had stopped the police from reaching the spot. Probably this might have been done to save the accused.

Warrant was issued in March also

This is not the first warrant issued against Pragya Thakur in the Malegaon blast case. In March this year, the NIA court had also issued a bailable warrant for the arrest of the BJP leader, who is the main accused in the blast. Then a warrant of Rs 10,000 was issued because Pragya Thakur remained absent in the court despite being directed to appear.

Poor health was cited in the court

During the March hearing, Pragya Thakur’s lawyer had requested for exemption from appearance in the court citing her ill health. Along with this, a photocopy of a letter issued by his doctor in Bhopal was presented in the court.
