Bangladesh: Hasina’s Awami League announces rally, “interim government refuses” –

Dhaka: When former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League called for a rally in Dhaka against the current government, the interim government got angry. The current government has refused permission for the rally in Bangladesh, terming Awami League as ‘fascist’. The government said the Awami League, the party of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, would not be allowed to hold the planned rally on Sunday. Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, said in a Facebook post that the interim government will not tolerate any violence or any attempt to disrupt law and order in the country.

Yunus said, “Awami League in its present form is a fascist party. Under no circumstances will this fascist party be allowed to hold protests in Bangladesh.” Alam warned, ”Anyone who tries to organize rallies, meetings and processions by taking orders from mass murderer and dictator Sheikh Hasina. He will have to face the full strictness of the law enforcement agencies.” Alam’s statement came after Awami League made a call on its verified Facebook page asking party supporters to pay homage to martyr Noor Hussain in Gulistan on Sunday. There has been an urge to gather at Chhattar or Zero Point to protest against ‘misgovernance’.

Hasina had to leave the country on August 5

Hasina had fled to India on August 5 amid a massive student-led rebellion against her government. This is the first call for a rally by the Awami League after his visit to India. The Awami League has urged party workers to organize grassroots rallies across the country on Sunday in keeping with the ‘spirit of the call’ described in the Facebook post. The protest site ‘Shaheed Noor Hussain Chhatar’ holds historical significance as it was here that Awami League youth leader Noor Hussain was murdered on November 10, 1987, during a demonstration against the autocratic rule of the then military dictator General HM Ershad.
