Recently, information had come to light that Karnataka Waqf Board has got the land of many farmers registered in its name. It was also revealed that mutation of land in the revenue records was also done hastily. As soon as the Waqf Board’s occupation of farmers’ land was revealed, the opposition BJP in Karnataka made it a big issue. BJP directly accused CM Siddaramaiah of the Congress government of Karnataka that on his instructions the land was snatched from the farmers and given in the name of Waqf Board. BJP was continuously raising this issue. As a result, the politics of Karnataka was heated. After this, the Karnataka government has now worked to stop the steps taken by the Waqf Board and the Revenue Department.
Let us tell you that such questions keep being raised regarding the functioning of Waqf boards across the country. Recently, a case from Tamil Nadu came to light. Where the Waqf Board had claimed a village itself. Whereas, there is also a very ancient temple there. Similarly, in a village in Bihar, the Waqf Board had claimed to own the land and had sent notices to the people there. In Surat, Gujarat, the Waqf Board laid claim on the municipal building itself. Which was later canceled by the Gujarat High Court. Actually, Waqf Boards have unlimited power. He can claim any land as his own. Hearing against this is held only in Waqf Board and Waqf Tribunal. The Modi government had brought an amendment bill to ban such functioning of the Waqf Board. At present, discussion on this bill is going on in JPC.
