Mohammad Asaduzzaman Demanded Removal of the Word Secular: After the new government came to power in Bangladesh under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus, a vast change is being seen in the politics and social balance of the country.
Recently Attorney General of Bangladesh Mohammad Asaduzzaman (Mohammed Asaduzzaman) has raised the demand to remove the word secular from the country’s constitution, which has raised many questions regarding the future religious and political nature of Bangladesh.
During the hearing on the validity of the 15th Constitutional Amendment in the court, Asaduzzaman said in front of the bench of Justices Farah Mehboob and Debashish Roy Chowdhury that in view of the 90 percent Muslim population of Bangladesh, provisions like faith in Allah and Bengali nationalism should be strengthened.
In this context, Asaduzzaman opposed several amendments made to the Constitution of Bangladesh, including the provision declaring Sheikh Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as the Father of the Nation.
He argued that such laws could hamper freedom of expression and could also lead to social division in the country. He has requested the court to declare these constitutional amendments unconstitutional.
The government also adopted a critical approach regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.
With the coming of Yunus government, reports of increase in incidents of attacks on Hindu minorities are also coming to the fore. Many obstacles were put in place, especially during important Hindu festivals like Durga Puja, which has increased apprehensions among the minority community regarding security and religious freedom.
Amid resentment towards the government, incidents of attacks and violence on Hindu temples at several places in Bangladesh have horrified the Hindu community.
Yunus government, while adopting a strict attitude towards India, has also given negative statements about India many times. The government has even taken a critical stance on holding India responsible for the recent floods and the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.
This increasing fundamentalist attitude in Bangladesh and incidents of violence against minorities have increased the possibility of it affecting the diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. The Indian diplomatic community is now keeping an eye on what kind of impact these constitutional and religious changes will have on regional stability in the coming times.
