The Supreme Court on Thursday said it will hear after eight weeks a plea seeking a ban on a website that features jokes on members of the Sikh community and portrays them in a bad light. “This is an important case,” a bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan said.
Ridicule on women’s clothing
Petitioner Harvinder Chaudhary informed the bench that she would consolidate her suggestions as well as those of other parties in the case and file a brief. The bench gave him eight weeks’ time and listed the matter for further hearing. During the hearing, Chaudhary highlighted the grievances of women from the Sikh community who were ridiculed for their attire. Apart from this, he also told about the problems related to Sikh children in schools. The bench said, “You prepare a small compilation so that it becomes easy to read.”
Over 5,000 websites mentioned
The top court had agreed to hear the petition in October 2015, following which more petitions raising similar complaints were filed. The petitioner had earlier mentioned that there were more than 5,000 websites displaying jokes on Sikhs and portraying members of the community in a bad image. The petition said that such websites displaying jokes on Sikhs should be banned for violating the fundamental right to life and dignity guaranteed under the Constitution.
