Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan (born March 12, 1913 – died November 25, 1984) was the fifth Deputy Prime Minister of India and the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra. At one time, there were prominent politicians of India and successful ministers of important departments of the Central Government. Yashwantrao Chavan was a strong Congress leader, freedom fighter, cooperative leader, social worker and writer. He was popular as the ‘leader of the common man’. Yashwantrao Chavan strongly advocated socialist democracy in his speeches and writings and played an important role in setting up cooperative societies for the betterment of farmers in Maharashtra.

Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan was born on March 12, 1914 in a farmer family in Satara district of Maharashtra. His father died in his childhood, so he was brought up by his uncle and mother. He was influenced by India’s freedom struggle since his childhood. Despite adverse family conditions, Yashwantrao was successful in completing his education. After taking a law degree from Pune, he started practicing law. His public life began with his arrest in the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1932. After staying underground for some time during the Quit India Movement, he was captured again in 1943 while helping the Satara movement.
After being released from jail, Chavan was elected member of the Mumbai Assembly. After being successful in the 1952 elections, he was taken into the cabinet. Then he became the Chief Minister of Mumbai and when Gujarat became a separate state, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. When Krishna Menon had to leave the post of Defense Minister during the Chinese invasion of 1962, Yashwantrao Chavan was appointed to the post of Defense Minister of the country. He remained in this post till 1966. Then he held the posts of Home Minister, Finance Minister and Foreign Minister respectively.
Yashwantrao Chavan’s behavior was criticized during the Congress split of 1969. Earlier he voted against Indira ji, but when that party did not get success, he again joined Indira Congress. Chavan became the leader of the opposition after the defeat of the Congress in 1977. After the fall of the Janata Party government, he once again changed parties and joined Charan Singh. Charan Singh’s government could not be formed, Chavan’s reputation fell in the eyes of the people.
