A large number of trans women in India are facing depression and anxiety: Research

भारत में बड़ी संख्‍या में डिप्रेशन और एंग्जायटी का सामना कर रही हैं ट्रांस वुमन : शोध

New Delhi, November 25 (IANS). A research has revealed that trans women in India have to struggle with depression, severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

Researchers at the George Institute for Global Health India, in collaboration with global partners, have shed light on the mental health challenges faced by trans women in India. The research examines their experiences of rejection, discrimination and social exclusion, and calls for urgent action to address these issues.

A research published in the journal Wellcome Open Research shows how negativity starts in life. Trans women are often rejected in families, which lowers their self-esteem.

Due to harassment in schools, many people are forced to drop out of school and are unable to get education or stable employment. Many trans women have limited options and often resort to begging or sex work to survive.

Healthcare discrimination has also emerged as a major issue. Stories of abuse by hospital staff and a lack of understanding from healthcare providers prevent many trans women from getting medical help.

As a result, their physical and mental health needs often go unmet. These experiences have a significant impact on mental health, leading to depression and anxiety as well as suicidal thoughts in trans women.

“The most important takeaway from the research is that there is a lack of mental health research focused on trans women in low- and middle-income countries like India,” said Dr Sandhya Kanaka Yathirajula, Program Lead – Mental Health, George Institute for Global Health India. . While global studies often focus on HIV-related issues. The mental health needs of transgender communities are largely ignored. “This research highlights the urgent need for intervention to address its impact on their lives.”

Social support is a ray of hope for such people. Acceptance, education and employment opportunities are a powerful tool that can boost their social status and mental health. However, such opportunities are rare in India, where an estimated 4.8 million transgender people live.

The study stressed the need for gender-verification policies that promote inclusivity and equality. The researchers stressed the importance of creating safe spaces where trans women are valued and respected.
