Peshawar: The death toll in the violence has risen to 122 after two people were killed in fresh incidents of firing despite the ceasefire between Sunni and Shia communities in different parts of Kurram district in Pakistan’s restive north-west region. The violence between Sunni and Shia communities began last week and minor clashes have continued despite a ceasefire. There was another firing between the two communities on Thursday, in which two people died while six people were injured. Let us tell you that, a day after the ambush on a van carrying passengers near Parachinar in Kurram district bordering Afghanistan on November 21, violence broke out between Alizai and Bagan tribal groups in the district. 47 people were killed in the attack on the passenger van. Many passengers who were seriously injured in this attack died during treatment, due to which the death toll in this attack increased to 57. At least 37 people were killed and several others injured in the violence that broke out between the two communities in Bagan Bazaar area last Friday and Saturday. Soon after this, the violence spread to other places in the district including Balishkhel, Khar, Kali, Junj Alizai and Maqbal.

Police and hospital sources said at least 65 people have been killed in the firing incidents that continued till Friday. Police said that earlier on Sunday, the government had imposed a seven-day ceasefire between Shia and Sunni communities, which was later extended to 10 days. Despite the ceasefire, sporadic clashes continued between the two communities. “The death toll in the communal violence in Kurram that has been going on since November 21 has risen to 122 till Friday, while 145 people are injured,” police and hospital sources said.
