Washington: America has spoken of respect for fundamental freedoms including religious and basic human rights amid attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. India continues to express concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedanta Patel told reporters, “We are clear that fundamental freedoms must be respected.” Patel said, “Governments need to respect the rule of law, They should respect basic human rights. We will always keep emphasizing on this.

‘Protest should be peaceful’

Vedant Patel said that any kind of protest should be peaceful. “We emphasize that those detained should also be given proper representation and treated in accordance with basic fundamental freedoms and human rights,” Patel said in response to a question.

‘Government should protect Hindu minorities’

Meanwhile, US Congressman Brad Sherman said in a statement, “The interim government of Bangladesh has an absolute responsibility to protect the Hindu minority and to respond meaningfully to the recent attacks and persecution of thousands of minority Hindus.” “The administration must play a role in ending violence against the Hindu community,” Sherman said.
