New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi is adamant on going to Sambal but he is not getting permission from the administration. After being stopped at the Ghazipur border, he said that he was ready to go to Sambhal alone with the police but he was not being allowed to do so. The Congress leader also said that preventing him from going to Sambal is a violation of his privileges as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
My right to go as an opposition
After leaving for Sambhal, the police stopped him at Ghazipur border of Delhi. When stopped by the police, Rahul told reporters, “We are trying to be careful, but the police is refusing.” As the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is my right to go there. But still he is stopping me. This is against my right to be the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.” He said, ”I have said that I am ready to go alone. I am ready to go with the police but they did not agree to that and now they are saying that they will let us go after a few days.
The government is depriving me of my constitutional rights.
Showing a copy of the Constitution, Rahul said, “This (being prevented from going to Sambhaal) is against democracy.” We want to go carefully and see what happened there. We want to meet people but I am being deprived of my constitutional right. This is India that is destroying the Constitution. India is the one that is destroying Ambedkar ji’s Constitution. But we will keep fighting.” His sister and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was present at the spot with Rahul, also expressed her displeasure over Rahul being stopped and said, ”Whatever happened in Sambhal is wrong. Rahul ji is the leader of opposition. They have constitutional privileges which are different from the rest of the people. They cannot be stopped.”
Stopped at Delhi-Ghazipur border
Rahul Gandhi, who was going to meet the families of the victims in violence-hit Sambhal, was stopped at the Delhi-Ghazipur border on the way on Wednesday. A senior police officer said that Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka and other senior leaders reached Ghazipur border. His convoy has been stopped by putting up barricades. Heavy police force has been deployed at the spot. Ghaziabad Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra said that to maintain peace in Sambhal, Section 163 (Prohibitory Order) of the Indian Civil Defense Code will remain in force in Sambhal till December 31. Along with this, the ban on entry of outsiders in Sambhal was ending on Saturday, which the District Magistrate has extended to December 10.
Four people died in violence
A Congress delegation led by Rahul Gandhi had left to visit violence-hit Sambhal. A Sambhal court had on November 19 ordered a survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid located in the Kot East locality of the city and a team conducted the survey there on the same day. Since then controversy had arisen. After that, again on November 24, four people were killed in the violence that broke out during the survey. The court has ordered the survey on a petition which claims that the place where Jama Masjid is situated once used to be the site of Harihar Temple. (input language)
