Dhaka: India is concerned about the ongoing attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Many times the Indian Foreign Ministry has demanded the interim government of Bangladesh to stop the attacks on Hindus. Despite this, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has failed in this. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri may visit Bangladesh next week for a Foreign Secretary level meeting amid tension between the two countries after the formation of the Yunus government.

Foreign affairs adviser Mohammad Tauheed Hossain said the scheduled foreign secretary-level talks between Bangladesh and India will be held in Dhaka on December 9 or 10, according to state news agency BSS. This will be the first high-level visit by a senior Indian government official to Bangladesh since the formation of the interim government on August 8 following the removal of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister. “It is very clear that we want good relations (with India),” Hussain told reporters at the Ministry of External Affairs here. However, he stressed that relations between Bangladesh and India should be on a reciprocal basis. “Both sides need this and should work towards it,” he said.

Foreign Secretary level talks to be held on December 10

Hussain said that although the Foreign Secretary level talks are to be held on December 10, it can also be held a day earlier on December 9. The news agency reported that Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin and Indian Foreign Secretary Misri will lead their respective delegations during the high-level talks. According to the news agency, a number of bilateral issues are expected to be discussed in the discussions, including Hasina’s possible extradition and visa related matters. Hasina is facing trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh over alleged involvement in mass killings during the July-August insurgency. Tension between Bangladesh and India had increased on August 5, when Hasina left the country and went to India. This tension increased further after the arrest of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das last week. (Language)
