According to the scriptures and Puranas, Ram Ji is the incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu and was born as the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. On the fifth day of Margashirsha month, Shri Ram went to Janakpuri, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, along with his younger brother Lakshman and Guru Vishwamitra. This was the same auspicious time when King Janak had organized a swayamvara for Mata Janaki. Lord Ram also participated in this swayamvar. Apart from this, many great kings also participated in the Swayamvar to marry Goddess Sita, but no one was able to fulfill the condition of King Janak.
(Actually, Janak ji had the bow of Lord Shiva, on which he had placed a condition of stringing it.) Unfortunately everyone failed in this. But Ram ji had done this with the permission of his Guru Vishwamitra. As soon as he picked up the bow, it broke into two pieces and everyone present there was astonished. After this, Mother Sita was legally married to Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram.
