Bina Rai (English: Bina Rai, born- 13 July, 1932, Lucknow; died- 6 December, 2009, Mumbai) was a famous actress of Hindi films. His real name was ‘Krishna Sarin’. She was one of the best actresses of the fifties. He started his film career with the film ‘Kali Ghata’ released in 1951. After marriage, Bina Rai along with her husband started ‘P.N. Films’ banner produced films like ‘Shagufa’ (1953), ‘Golkonda Ka Qaidi’ (1954) and ‘Samundar’ (1957). This husband-wife duo also acted in these films. ‘Apna Ghar Apni Kahani’ made in 1968 was Bina Rai’s last released film, after which she broke her ties with the film industry and got completely engrossed in her family life.
Born on July 13, 1932 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Bina Rai’s father was a railway officer. Everyone in his house was fond of watching films. Bina ji’s favorite heroine was Khurshid. The decade of the fifties witnessed the rise of talented actresses like Shyama, Nanda, Vyjayantimala, Nutan, Asha Parekh, Mala Sinha, Meena Kumari, Waheeda Rehman and Amita, who started their careers as heroines in this decade and gained popularity with their talent and beauty. But later on he made millions of viewers crazy about him. Among these actresses was the beautiful actress Bina Rai, who entered the film industry with producer-director Kishore Sahu’s film ‘Kali Ghata’ (1951). In her career of 18 years, Bina Rai worked in only twenty-eight films and then sensing the changing trend of the times, she gracefully stepped away from the film industry and then for more than four decades, she kept herself out of the eyes of the media and her fans. Bina Rai continued working in films even after marriage. Even at that time, many kinds of apprehensions were raised regarding the career of a married actress. But in the case of Bina Rai, all such apprehensions proved to be false, because her career really took off only after marriage. ‘Gauhar’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Minar’, ‘Insaniyat’, ‘Madbhare Nain’, ‘Marine Drive’, ‘Sardar’, ‘Chandrakanta’, ‘Hamara Watan’, ‘Durgeshnandini’, ‘Bandi’, ‘Hill Station’ ‘, ‘Mera Salaam’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Ghunghat’, ‘Wallah Kya Baat Hai’, ‘Taj Mahal’ and ‘Dadi Maa’. In twenty-eight films he acted with all the well-known heroes of his time like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Bharat Bhushan, Kishore Kumar, Pradeep Kumar and Shammi Kapoor. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the film ‘Ghunghat’ (1960).
Bina Rai spent the last years of her life living with the family of her younger son, actor Monty, in the famous Anita Building in Malabar Hill, South Mumbai. He died on 6 December 2009 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
