Politics: Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been formed for ‘One Nation One Election’, it includes 10 members from Rajya Sabha and 21 members from Lok Sabha. In this list, 31 leaders including Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, Dharmendra Yadav, Kalyan Banerjee, Supriya Sule, Shrikant Eknath Shinde, Sambit Patra, Anil Baluni and Anurag Singh Thakur were named as JPC members.
This parliamentary committee will deliberate on the bill in which it is proposed to hold elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously. According to the notification issued on Wednesday, the JPC will prepare a report and submit it to the House on the first day of the last week of the budget session.

Let us tell you that Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Union Territory Law (Amendment Bill) 2024 in the Lok Sabha last Tuesday. The ‘Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024’ and the ‘Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’, which propose to hold simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, were introduced in the Lok Sabha today. In the voting, 269 members voted in favor of the bill, while 196 voted against it.
Opposition opposes ‘one nation, one election’
Opposition parties including Congress, DMK and others have criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill and termed it as against federalism. At the same time, the government argues that crores of rupees are being spent in elections, holding elections simultaneously can reduce the expenditure. According to the Election Commission, conducting a Lok Sabha election costs Rs 3700 crore, which is 0.02 percent of the annual budget. To save this expenditure, the Central Government wants to abolish the entire federal structure of India and want to make the Election Commission more powerful.
TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee opposed the bill. He said that it attacks the basic structure of the Constitution. He said that whenever Parliament is dissolved, elections will have to be held in all the states. The State Assembly and the State Government are not subordinate to the Parliament and the Central Government.
