WHO Chief Tedros
World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped the bombing at Sana’a airport in Yemen. Tedros was about to board the plane with his colleagues from the United Nations and the World Health Organization when the bombing occurred. WHO Director General himself has revealed this in a social media post.
Bombing happened just a few meters away
Tedros wrote that when he and his colleagues were about to board the plane, the bombing started. One crew member of our aircraft was injured in this attack. Two people were killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge – just a few meters from where we were – were bombed and the runways were damaged. Now we have to wait until the damage to the airport is repaired, only then we can leave. My UN colleagues and WHO colleagues are safe. We express our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack.
Had arrived for the release of UN employees
