A song will emerge from the sigh.
Coming out silently,
The poem will be written unknown…’
These lines are from the truly unique and distinguished poet Sumitranandan Pant, the delicate poet of nature and one of the four pillars of Chhayavad, whose death anniversary is on his 28th. Poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, who spread the fragrance of nature in her poems, was born on May 20, 1900 in Kausani village of Almora (Uttar Pradesh). Since his mother passed away shortly after his birth, he took the nature of his village, full of natural beauty, as his mother.
Life story of Sumitranandan Pant
Along with singing songs to the tune of harmonium and tabla in Almora since childhood, he displayed his creativity and inventiveness and started composing poetry at the age of seven. After seeing a picture of Napoleon at a young age, he changed his name from Gusain Dutt to Sumitranandan Pant and decided to grow his hair like him.
Due to his gentle and sweet nature, fair complexion, dark glasses, long silky curly hair and physical structure, he always remained the center of attraction among poets. Pant had unwavering faith in God since childhood. He remained absorbed in God’s meditation for hours. Considering his poetic creation dependent on God, he used to say – ‘Can anyone think and write well, when he has to write, he will write.’
After receiving his primary education from Almora, he along with his elder brother Devi Dutt came to Kashi for further education and took admission in Queens College and became popular with his poems. Pant continued writing poetry only on women’s subjects for 25 years. He was a staunch supporter of women’s freedom. He said that the complete upliftment of Indian civilization and culture is possible only when women live in a free environment. He himself says-
Free the woman as a human being,
To the eternally adored woman.
From the cruel prison of every age,
To the beloved mother and friend.
