Early life and struggles
Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1932 in an ordinary family in Chorwad village of Gujarat. Due to financial constraints he had to leave studies after 10th. At the age of 17, he started working at a petrol pump in Aden city of Yemen to help his family. There he got a monthly salary of Rs 300. Due to his hard work and dedication, he was soon promoted to the position of manager at the filling station.
beginning of reliance
Dhirubhai returned to India in 1954. With a savings of Rs 500 and big dreams, he started Reliance Commerce Corporation from a small room in Mumbai. His company imported polyester yarn and exported spices to India. Gradually he expanded the business and entered the textile industry in 1966 with the Vimal brand. The brand soon became popular in the Indian market and Dhirubhai made his mark.
expansion and success
Along with textiles, Dhirubhai also expanded into petrochemicals, refining and other sectors. He not only promoted business but also provided employment opportunities to lakhs of people. His vision and leadership skills made Reliance India’s number 1 company by 2000 with a valuation of Rs 62 thousand crores.
Legacy and inspiration
Dhirubhai Ambani died on 6 July 2002, but his legacy was carried forward by his sons Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani. Today Reliance Industries is worth Rs 16.60 lakh crore and Mukesh Ambani is among the richest people in the world.
