Kiev: Russia and Ukraine have exchanged prisoners of war in which hundreds of prisoners have been released. Giving information, officials said that this agreement for exchange of prisoners has been made with the help of United Arab Emirates. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a total of 189 Ukrainian prisoners, including military personnel, border guards and national guardsmen and two civilians, were released in the prisoner exchange. Zelensky thanked the UAE for its help in the exchange. Russia’s Defense Ministry said that under this exchange, 150 Russian soldiers were freed from captivity.

“We are working to free everyone from Russian captivity,” Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement. We don’t forget anyone.” He posted photos of Ukrainian soldiers sitting on a bus, some of whom were holding the country’s blue and yellow flags. Zelensky said those freed from Russian captivity included defenders of Snake Island near the Black Sea port of Odessa, which Russia captured in the early days of its invasion. They also included the soldiers who defended the city of Mariupol. The city of Mariupol was captured by Moscow forces early in the war after a siege of nearly three months. “The return of our people from Russian captivity is always very good news for all of us,” Zelensky said. Our team has managed to bring 189 Ukrainians back home.
What did Russia say?
In Moscow, the Defense Ministry said Russian soldiers were first taken to the territory of Russia’s neighbor and ally Belarus, where they were given “psychological and medical assistance” before being flown to Russia. Russia and Ukraine have exchanged prisoners this way dozens of times during their nearly three-year war.
America again gave weapons
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden announced that his country will send additional arms worth about US$2.5 billion to Ukraine. He said his administration was moving quickly to spend all the money at its disposal to help Kiev fight Russia before Donald Trump takes office. (AP)
