Abidjan: Ivory Coast has said that French soldiers present on its soil will soon leave the country. French soldiers have been present here for decades. Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said the process of withdrawal of troops would begin this month. He said, “We have decided to withdraw the French troops present in Ivory Coast in a planned manner.” There are 600 French soldiers present in Ivory Coast.

France’s influence is decreasing

The President said that the command of the military battalion of Port Boet, which till now was being handled by French soldiers, will now be handed over to the country’s army. Apart from Ivory Coast, many West African countries have recently asked French soldiers to leave their countries. This includes Senegal, Mali, Chad, Niger and Burkina Faso. French soldiers were present in these countries for many years. This development signals a change in relations between France and its former colonies, and also reflects France’s declining influence.

where are the french soldiers

French troops have now left more than 70 percent of African countries. France’s army was present in these countries after the end of its colonial rule. French troops are now left only in Djibouti where they have 1,500 troops and in Gabon where they have 350 troops. Analysts have attributed these developments to growing local sentiments against France. (AP)
