Police action in Pakistan May 9 violence case
Islamabad: The Pakistan Army on Thursday said it has accepted the mercy petitions of 19 convicts involved in the attacks on military bases on May 9, 2023. Military courts had sentenced
Hundreds of suspects were arrested in raids conducted across the country following the violence. The cases of more than 100 civilians were sent to military courts for trial because they were involved in attacks on military installations. In December, military courts sentenced 85 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to ten years for their roles in the violence.
Will be released after completing the formalities
The Army said in a statement issued on Thursday that following the announcement of punishment to the culprits in the May 9 incident, they have exercised their right to appeal and sought mercy and remission of their sentence. According to the statement, 67 convicts have submitted their mercy petitions, and 48 petitions have been processed in the appeal courts, while the petitions of 19 convicts have been accepted on humanitarian grounds as per law. The Army said that a decision on the mercy petitions of the remaining convicts will be taken in time after the legal process. The Army said those whose mercy appeals have been accepted will be released after completion of the formalities. (Language)
