No rooms for unmarried couples, Oyo explains check-in policy for partner hotels

New Delhi, January 5 (IANS). As controversy grows over Oyo’s revised policy for partner hotels, the hospitality major on Sunday said the initiative is aimed at providing a safe experience to families, students, businessmen, religious and solo travellers.

Earlier, starting with Meerut, Oyo had directed its partner hotels to ensure this with immediate effect and based on the feedback, the travel booking major may implement the same in other cities as well.

Under the revised policy, all couples will be asked to present valid proof of relationship at the time of check-in, including for online booking.

OYO has empowered its partner hotels to decline couple bookings at their discretion in line with local social sensitivities.

In a statement, the company said that Oyo is committed to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality practices.

The company said in a statement, “While we respect individual liberty and private freedoms, we also recognize our responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets where we operate.” We will continue to review this policy and its impact from time to time.”

“This initiative is a part of Oyo’s program to change the perception and position itself as a brand that provides safe experiences for families, students, businessmen, religious and solo travelers,” he said.

The initiative aims to encourage longer stays and repeat bookings and increase customer trust and loyalty.

In September last year, Oyo’s parent company Oravel Stage had announced the acquisition of the Motel 6 and Studio 6 chains with around 1,500 facilities in the US and Canada from investment firm Blackstone in a cash deal worth $525 million.

With the acquisition of G6 Hospitality, the parent company of two budget lodging chains, Oyo will become a major player in the US and Canada hospitality industry, which is already dominated by Indian Americans.
