Sahitya News Desk!!! Kamleshwar (English: Kamleshwar, born- January 6, 1932; death- January 27, 2007) is one of the most powerful writers of the twentieth century. He showed his writing talent in many genres like stories, novels, journalism, column writing, film scripts etc. He wrote scripts for many Hindi films and for Indian Doordarshan series Darpan, Chandrakanta, Betal Pachisi, Virat Yug etc. Also wrote the first authentic and historical mass-stage media story ‘Hindustan Hamara’ based on the Indian Independence Movement.

Full name ‘Kamaleshwar Prasad Saxena’ was born on January 6, 1932 in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. After primary studies, Kamleshwar passed the post-graduation examination from Allahabad University. Kamleshwar was a multifaceted creator. He also set a precedent in the field of editing. Apart from ‘Nai Kahani’, he not only edited magazines like ‘Sarika’, ‘Katha Yatra’, ‘Ganga’ etc., he was also the chief editor of Rajasthan Alankaran of ‘Dainik Bhaskar’. Wrote, directed and produced documentaries on Kashmir and Ayodhya etc. and also documentaries on social concerns like ‘Band File’ and ‘Jalta Sawal’ for Doordarshan.

Starting editing of magazines like ‘Vihaan’ in 1954, Kamleshwar successfully edited many magazines including ‘Nai Kahaniyan’ (1963-66), ‘Sarika’ (1967-78), ‘Kathayatra’ (1978-79), ‘Ganga’. ‘ (1984-88) etc. are prominent. Other magazines edited by him are – ‘Ingit’ (1961-63) and ‘Shrivarsha’ (1979-80). He has also been the editor of Hindi daily ‘Dainik Jagran’ (1990-92). He has been continuously associated with ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ since 1997. Meanwhile, he took charge of the news division of Jain TV. Kamleshwar was also the Additional Director General of Doordarshan from 1980-82. Kamleshwar’s name comes among the leading storytellers associated with the Nai Kahani movement. His first story was published in 1948 but with ‘Raja Nirbansia’ (1957) he became a big story writer overnight. Kamleshwar has written more than three hundred stories. His stories include ‘Maans Ka Dariya’, ‘Neeli Jheel’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Bayan’, ‘Naagmani’, ‘Apna Ekant’, ‘Aasakti’, ‘Zinda Murde’, ‘George Pancham Ki Naak’, ‘Murde Ki ‘Duniya’, ‘Kasbe ka Aadmi’ and ‘Monument’ etc. are notable.

Kamleshwar has also achieved considerable success in the field of writing for film and television. Apart from films like Sara Aakash, Aandhi, Amanush and Mausam, he also did ‘Mr. Has written 99 Hindi films including films like ‘Natwarlal’, ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Ram Balram’. Kamleshwar is also known as the first script writer of Indian Doordarshan. He has written many successful serials for television, prominent among which are ‘Chandrakanta’, ‘Yug’, ‘Betal Pachisi’, ‘Aakash Ganga’, ‘Ret Par Likhe Naam’ etc. He also wrote the first literary serial ‘Darpan’ based on Indian stories. He started the literary program ‘Patrika’ on Doordarshan and the credit for producing the first telefilm ‘Pandrah August’ also goes to him. Kamleshwar ji also took a bold initiative towards running an open debate on socio-cultural problems in ‘Parikrama’, which ran on Doordarshan for almost seven years. He was the most active, diverse and brilliant Hindi writer of post-independence India.

As a novelist, ‘Kitne Pakistan’ gave him the most fame and made him a timeless litterateur. This is the first novel in Hindi, which has had eleven editions so far in five years, from 2002 to 2008. The first version was finished within six months. The second edition within five months, the third edition within four months. In this way, its editions kept coming and ending every few months.
Honors and Awards
Kamleshwar received ample respect and awards as a result of his creativity. In 2005, the President honored him with the ‘Padmabhushan’ decoration. Sahitya Akademi awarded him for his book ‘Kitne Pakistan’.
