Beijing: China on Tuesday closed its part of Mount Everest to tourists after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Mount Everest is also known as Mount Qomolangma. Dingri is the base camp of the world’s highest peak. According to local officials, workers and tourists are safe after the earthquake.

The earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 9:05 am Beijing time. According to the Regional Disaster Relief Headquarters, 95 people died and 130 were injured in the earthquake. The scenic area includes the hotel buildings and surrounding areas, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the Dingri Culture and Tourism Bureau.
