Cervical cancer is a common cause of death in women. Cervical cancer has emerged as the second most common cause of cancer death among Indian women aged 15 to 44 years. This situation becomes worse because only 3.1 percent of women in the country get tested, due to which the rest of the women live under the shadow of danger. Cervical cancer affects the lining of the cervix, i.e. the lower part of the uterus. Cervical cancer is mostly caused by human papilloma virus or HPV. Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death in women due to the lack of screening and vaccines against HPV. Cervical Cancer Month Awareness campaign is conducted in the month of January so that people know more and more about this disease. In such a situation, gynecologist Dr. Nancy Nagpal is telling the symptoms, causes and prevention measures of cervical cancer.
Causes of Cervical Cancer:
The most common cause of cervical cancer is chronic infection with HPV. HPV infection is common and not all HPV infections lead to cancer. There are many types of HPV. Other HPV types usually cause warts on the genitals or skin.
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
Vaginal bleeding on and off, foul smelling vaginal discharge, bleeding after intercourse, pain during intercourse, pain in the lower abdomen, vaginal bleeding even after menopause, abnormal vaginal bleeding, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight Symptoms include loss of appetite and pelvic pain.
When is the risk of cervical cancer?
Having sex before the age of 18. Having multiple sexual partners. HIV infection. Weak immunity. smoking
Cervical Cancer Vaccination:
The HPV vaccine is approved for ages 9 to 45 years. It is best to get vaccinated before beginning sexual activity. If cervical cancer is diagnosed, treatment depends on the type, stage, and spread of the cancer. This includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Cervical Cancer Prevention:
Cervical screening with Pap smear test and HPV screening. Timely HPV vaccination. Abstaining from smoking and maintaining proper lifestyle and good sexual health.
