New Delhi, January 10 (IANS). A report says that an annual increase of 0.90 percent has been recorded in cases of human immunodeficiency virus in 2023. It is expected to increase from 2.00 million in 2023 to 2.18 million in 2033.
The report by analytics company GlobalData has revealed that this increase in HIV cases will be seen mainly in the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and Japan.
In this report, it has been estimated that in 2033, the highest number of HIV cases will be seen in seven countries. The report also says that the highest number of cases will be in America. About 1.46 million cases may be reported from here.
The lowest number of cases will be in Japan. There are estimated to be around 34,400 cases here.
“The number of diagnosed cases of HIV is expected to increase due to increased diagnosis rates, antiretroviral treatment (ART) and an increase in the average age of HIV-positive people,” said Casey Freimuth, senior epidemiologist at GlobalData. “And the prevalence of diagnosed HIV cases is expected to increase in these countries due to the combination of population dynamics.”
There are tools available to reduce the spread of HIV in the future. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has recently been approved in the US and five European countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK. It has not yet been accepted in Japan.
“Future efforts to reduce the burden of HIV should focus more on reducing transmission through PrEP or through the use of ART,” Freimuth said.
