Lahore: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has moved the Lahore High Court seeking bail after his arrest in eight cases related to the May 9, 2023 violence. These cases also include an attack on the residence of a senior army officer. Separate bail petitions were filed before the Lahore High Court on Saturday. In November last year, the anti-terrorism court of Lahore had refused to grant bail to Khan in these cases.
Imran Khan (72) argued in his petitions that the prosecution had failed to prove his involvement in the violence that broke out on May 9 after his arrest. Violent protests had erupted following Khan’s arrest by paramilitary Rangers on 9 May 2023 from the Islamabad High Court complex. His party workers vandalized a dozen military installations, including Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander’s House), Mianwali Airbase and the ISI Building in Faisalabad.
The mob attacked the army headquarters
The mob also attacked the Army Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. Khan said he was implicated in the May 9 cases as a result of “a well-planned conspiracy to harass and humiliate him only for political reasons”. He said the only charge against him in these cases is that of ‘instigation’, which the prosecution has advanced in a very vague manner. Lahore High Court is likely to consider Khan’s petition on Monday. Khan is in jail since August 2023 in connection with several cases. (Language)
