New Delhi, January 14 (IANS). Central Delhi seats always play an important role in Delhi elections. Wazirpur, which falls in Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency of Central Delhi, is also one such seat which becomes the electoral arena for the ruling party and the opposition in Delhi elections. Aam Aadmi Party has held this seat for the last two times. This time too, AAP will contest this seat with the intention of scoring a hat-trick while Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress will contest this seat to break AAP’s spell.
Wazirpur, located in North Delhi, is a bustling urban area, famous for its industrial importance, commercial activity and convenient connectivity. The area is located close to the Netaji Subhash Place metro station, and is known as a major commercial and industrial hub. Wazirpur is famous for its industrial estates and manufacturing units, including automotive, electronics, textile and other industries. These industries have provided employment opportunities to the region and have contributed significantly to the economy of Delhi.
In the 2020 elections, Rajesh Gupta of Aam Aadmi Party won the Wazirpur assembly seat with 57,331 votes. He defeated BJP’s Mahendra Nagpal, who got 45,641 votes, by a margin of 11,690 votes. Congress candidate Harikishan Jindal got 3,501 votes. In the 2020 elections, out of a total of 1,81,241 voters, 1,09,654 cast their votes, which was about 60 percent voting. Earlier, in the 2015 assembly elections also, Rajesh Gupta had defeated BJP’s Mahendra Nagpal and this time too the victory margin was more. In 2015, Rajesh Gupta got 61,208 votes, while BJP’s Mahendra Nagpal got 39,164 votes. Hari Shankar Gupta of Congress got 8,371 votes.
Elections to the Wazirpur assembly seat were held for the first time in 1993, and then Deep Chand Bandhu of Congress had won. He also registered his second consecutive victory in the 1998 elections. However, in 2003, BJP won this seat by defeating Congress. BJP’s Mange Ram Garg won the election from here, but in 2008 he had to face defeat at the hands of Congress’s Harishankar Gupta. There was a change in the politics of Wazirpur after the entry of Aam Aadmi Party in the year 2013, but Aam Aadmi Party could not win from here in that election.
In 2015, Aam Aadmi Party nominated Rajesh Gupta as its candidate, and he won back the seat by defeating BJP’s Mahendra Nagpal. Subsequently, the same electoral struggle was seen in 2020, with Rajesh Gupta defeating BJP’s Mahendra Nagpal by a margin of 11,690 votes. There was a huge decline in Congress’s votes, and it got only 3,501 votes, compared to 8,371 votes in 2015.
Voting for Delhi Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5. The result will be announced on 8 February.
