Rama Rao or Nandamuri Tarak Rama Rao (English: NT Rama Rao, born- 28 May 1923, Nimmakuru, Madras Presidency, British India; died- 18 January 1996, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) was a famous actor, director and producer of Telugu films. Apart from being an actor, he was also a good politician. Rama Rao, popularly known as NTR, founded the Telugu Desam Party and was also the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Before entering politics, he was a famous actor in Telugu films. He acted in many films based on the lives of Hindu deities such as Krishna and Ram and became a favorite with the audience. In recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1968 by the Government of India.

N. T. Rama Rao was born on 28 May 1923 in Nimmakuru, a small village in Krishna district of Madras Presidency. He received his primary education from Subbarao, a teacher from the same village. His parents gave him for adoption to his maternal uncle in his childhood. There was no good education system in the village, so he could study only till the fifth class in his village. After this he went to Vijayawada with his adoptive parents where he enrolled in a municipal school. He passed the 10th class examination in 1940 and then went to S.S. College of Vijayawada for further studies. R. R. And C.V.R. Enrolled in college. The financial condition of his family was not good, so during his studies, Rama Rao used to deliver milk in local hotels in Vijayawada to help his family. In the year 1945, he took admission in Andhra-Christian College for his graduation studies. In 1942, he married his maternal uncle’s daughter.

N. T. Rama Rao married his maternal uncle’s daughter Basava Tarakam in 1942, with whom he had eight sons and four daughters. His wife Basava Tarakam died in the year 1985. In 1993, at the age of seventy, Rama Rao remarried to Lakshmi Parvathi, a Telugu writer. But N.T.R. The family never accepted Lakshmi.

N.T. Rama Rao started his film career in 1949 with the Telugu film ‘Mana Desam’, in which he played the role of a police inspector. After this he wrote an English play based on ‘Pizarro’ and B. A. Acted in the film ‘Palleturi Pilla’ directed by Subbarao. This film achieved tremendous success. After this film Rama Rao became a popular actor. In his first mythological film ‘Maya Bazaar’ he played the character of Hindu deity Krishna. This film was also very successful, after which N. T. Rama Rao mostly made films based on Hindu deities and mythological stories.

He played the characters of Lord Ram, Krishna, Bhishma, Arjun, Karna, Duryodhana, Vishnu, Shiva etc. He played the character of Krishna in 17 films, the major films of which are – ‘Shri Krishnarjuna Yudham’, ‘Karna’ and ‘Daanveer Sur Karna’. After some time, Rama Rao left mythological films and played such characters which fight against the established system. These films became very popular among the common man. Prominent among them are – ‘Devudu Chesina Manushulu’, ‘Adavi Ramudu’, ‘Driver Ramudu’, ‘Vetagadu’, ‘Sardar Papa Rayudu’, ‘Justice Chaudhary’ etc.

N. T. Rama Rao entered politics in 1982 by founding the Telugu Desam Party with the aim of liberating Andhra Pradesh from the rule and hegemony of the Congress. When he started his political career, he was a successful and popular actor in Telugu cinema. His party got tremendous success in the elections. On 9 January 1983, he became the tenth Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh along with ten cabinet ministers and five ministers of state. Between 1983 and 1994, he became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh three times. During his first term, Rama Rao started mobilizing the public and worked to bring women and other backward sections of the society into the mainstream. In August 1984, Andhra Pradesh Governor Ram Lal removed him and made Bhaskar Rao the Chief Minister, but after huge protests, the Prime Minister removed Governor Ram Lal and appointed Shankar Dayal Sharma as the new Governor, who again made Rama Rao the Chief Minister in September 1984.

N.T. Rama Rao was so popular that after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, when there was a wave of Congress in the entire country, Congress could not win in Andhra Pradesh. Not only this, Telugu Desam also became the main opposition party in the Lok Sabha. In the 1989 elections, due to opposition wave, Telugu Desam Party lost the elections and Congress once again came back to power. In 1994 N. T. Rama Rao returned to power again. His Telugu Desam Party won 226 seats. This time he could remain the Chief Minister only for 9 months because his son-in-law Chandrababu Naidu carried out an assassination attempt within the party and removed Rama Rao from the post of Party President and Chief Minister.[1]

N. T. Rama Rao died on 18 January 1996 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
