Congress approached the Supreme Court regarding the Places of Worship Act, demanding to save secularism.

New Delhi. Congress has filed a petition in the Supreme Court regarding the Places of Worship Act 1991. Congress says that this law is very important to protect secularism in the country, which is a basic feature of the Constitution. In its petition, Congress has challenged the already filed petitions and said that any change in this law can harm the fabric of communal harmony and secularism of India.

Congress challenges against BJP leader’s petition

Earlier, BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay had filed a PIL challenging the validity of the Places of Worship Act 1991. In response to this, Congress has said in its petition that this challenge is malicious and an attempt to weaken the established principles of secularism. Congress underlined the constitutional and social importance of this law and said that its objective is to maintain communal harmony and strengthen the unity and integrity of the country.

Congress gave arguments

Congress says that this Act does not violate any fundamental right and strengthens the right to freedom of religion. The party argued that the purpose of the Places of Worship Act 1991 is to maintain peace and harmony in the country by preventing changes in religious places.

What is the Places of Worship Act?

According to the Places of Worship Act 1991, the status of religious places existing before August 15, 1947 will be maintained as it was. The purpose of this law is to prevent changes in religious places, so that communal disputes do not increase. However, the Ayodhya case was kept apart from this law.

When is the next hearing?

This matter will now be heard in the Supreme Court on 17 February 2025. Congress has appealed that the secular fabric of India should be protected by keeping this law intact.
