(English: Manik Sarkar, born January 22, 1949) is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Tripura. He is affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and is also a member of the party’s Politburo. In March 2008 he was sworn in as the leader of the Left Front, Tripura coalition government. He became the Chief Minister for the fourth consecutive time in the assembly elections held in 2013. His tenure as Chief Minister lasted for almost 20 years from March 11, 1998 to March 8, 2018.

Manik Sarkar was born on January 22, 1949 in a middle-class family in Radhakishorpur, Tripura. He is an Indian communist politician. His father ‘Amulya Sarkar’ worked as a tailor, while his mother ‘Anjali Sarkar’ was a state and later provincial government employee. Sarkar became active in student movements during his student days, and in 1968, at the age of 19, he became a member of one of India’s major political parties, the Marxist Communist Party. Due to his early political exposure, he also became the General Secretary of MBB College Students Union and was also made the Vice President of the Students Union. In 1972, at the early age of 23, he joined the State Committee of the Communist (Marxist) Party.
