53 percent global leprosy cases in India, legal improvement is necessary to help the affected: Specialist

New Delhi, 27 January (IANS). Experts say 53% of global leprosy are cases in India. Therefore, legal reforms are necessary to help the people affected by this disease.

Leprosy/Hain Sessen is an infectious disease, caused by bacteria called mycobacterium lapre. It damages deep wounds on the skin, hands, legs and skin veins.

According to experts, 53% of the world have leprosy cases in India. In a program organized in the national capital, senior scientist Dr. S. Shivsubramaniam said that it is necessary to promote community rehabilitation to end discrimination in the society and support the affected people.

Leprosy is not very contagious. However, if the patient comes in contact with the droplets coming out of the nose or mouth, the disease can spread. There is a lack of awareness in the society about leprosy. Due to this, many myths are associated with the disease.

Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, Empowerment of Persons with disabilities said, “It is worse than caste discrimination due to leprosy. Even family members keep distance from the affected person. ”

He said that legal reform and awareness is necessary so that the rights of the affected people can be protected. After treatment, the involvement of the affected people in the society should be ensured. Also, it is necessary to detect and treat the disease in the initial stage.

Chief Commissioner S. for disabled persons Govindaraja said, “750 leprosy colonies are still isolated in India. Out of more than 700 districts of the country, 125 districts still have a large number of leprosy cases. Chhattisgarh is at the forefront, where 24 There are cases of leprosy in the districts.

According to the World Health Organization, India wants to eliminate local leprosy cases by 2030. But the Government of India has set a target of * leprosy-free India * by 2027.

Experts said that leprosy can be easily cured when identified on time. It is not a permanent deformity or disability.
