New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday that the Gujarat government should ensure implementation of three new criminal laws in all the police commissioners by 30 April and at the earliest in the entire state. Shah was presiding over a review meeting on the implementation of criminal laws in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. He said that the state government should issue a circular to ensure that the provisions of murder by organized crime, terrorism and mob are not misused.

All three laws were implemented on 1 July last year

The Indian Code, Indian Civil Protection Code and Indian Evidence Act were implemented on July 1 last year. These laws have replaced the Indian Penal Code of the colonial period, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 respectively.

According to an official statement issued here, the Union Home Minister said that the state government should ensure their implementation in all Police Commissionerate by 30 April and complete the completion of the work done by the Gujarat government so far in implementing new laws. Their implementation should be ensured in the state. He said that it should be reviewed by the Chief Minister, a fortnightly review by the State Home Minister and at the level of Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and Director General of Police.

Shah praised Gujarat

Shah said that Gujarat has achieved significant achievement by filing a charge sheet on time in more than 92 percent of cases sentenced to more than 10 years. He underlined that for the remaining cases, the law should be reviewed to ensure the use of those provisions that provide permission from the court. The Home Minister said that Gujarat has done commendable job in converting ‘Zero FIR’ to 100 percent regular FIR. (With language inputs)
