New Delhi, 3 February (IANS). According to a new study, women who give birth to twins are double the risk of heart disease than women who have given birth to a single child.
The research was published in the European Heart Journal and found that the mothers of twins are more likely to be hospitalized due to heart disease within a year of delivery.
If a woman had a problem of high blood pressure during pregnancy, this danger increases even more.
This study conducted by scientists at Ratgar University in the US said that in the last few decades, the matters of twin pregnancies have increased all over the world. The main reason for this is fertility treatment (treatment of infertility) and a tendency to become a mother at an older age.
According to Chief Researcher Dr. Ruby Lynn, “The mother’s heart has to work hard during the twin pregnancy and it takes several weeks to return to the normal state after delivery.”
He further explained that “women who did not have blood pressure problems during pregnancy, are also at risk of heart disease for one year after delivery.”
A study of data of 3.6 million delivery in the US between 2010 and 2020 showed that the rate of hospitalization was 1,105.4 per 1 lakh delivery in the mothers of twins due to heart disease. This rate was 734.1 per 1 lakh delivery among the mothers of the same child.
Even if a woman did not have a high blood pressure problem during pregnancy, the chances of twin children being hospitalized due to heart disease were doubled more than normal women. And if there was hypertension during pregnancy, this danger increased by eight times.
However, research also showed that the mortality was high one year after delivery in women suffering from high blood pressure during single pregnancy, while it decreased in mothers of twins. This indicates that long -term risk to mothers of twins may be low, while already present cardiological problems in single pregnancy mothers may remain in effect.
According to Dr. Lynn, women suffering from women undergoing fertility, especially old age, obesity, diabetes, hypertension or heart disease should be made aware of the cardiovascular complications related to twin pregnancy.
Also, doctors should conduct regular checks for one year after delivery of such women, so that any heart problem can be detected on time.
