Vivek Joshi, a mechanical engineer from IIT Roorkee and Chief Secretary of Haryana, took over as Election Commissioner on Wednesday. Joshi, 58, is one of the youngest members to be part of the Election Commission.

Born on 21 May 1966, Joshi will turn 65 in May 2031, but according to the law, his term in the election panel will end on February 18 the same year.
CEC Dnyanesh Kumar will step down on January 26, 2029, while other Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will retire in July 2028. Joshi may probably be overseeing the Lok Sabha elections in 2029 as the next CEC.
Joshi is a 1989 batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service of Haryana cadre.
He has served as Chief Secretary of Haryana and Secretary of Personnel and Training Department and Financial Services Department in the Central Government. At the beginning of his career, he served as the General Registrar and Census Commissioner and Member Secretary of the Fifth State Finance Commission of Haryana.
Joshi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, is a mechanical engineer from IIT Roorkee. He has a MA and PhD in International Economics from IIFT, New Delhi to Masters, Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland.
